Leicester U3A was formed in 1995 and is now well established.
The target membership was at first people living in the South and East of Leicester and the majority of our members still come from those areas.
At first we recruited mainly recently retired academics from local universities, but members now come from all walks of life.
Several exploratory meetings were held and a rambling group was formed in May 1995. The area was then researched for a regular meeting place and the present organisation was launched on 3rd October 1995 when Mr Roy Wilson, the then National Coordinator, was the speaker
The groups formed in the early stages included The study of Buddhism, Modern Novel, German Conversation, French Literature, Tapestry, Music, Architecture, Philosophy, Bridge, Rambling and History.
Membership has increased steadily reaching more than 250 by the end of 2011.
